Hadestown is a musical by Anaïs Mitchell and Rachel Chavkin that tells a modern version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in Depression-era New Orleans. The story is about two young lovers, Orpheus and Eurydice, whose true love blossoms despite their poverty. Eurydice is convinced by Hades to work in his underground factory, Hadestown, in exchange for "comfort and stability". When Orpheus discovers her fate, he sets out to rescue her from the underworld, but Eurydice has signed a contract and now belongs to Hades. Orpheus has a song in his heart that could free people from Hades' lair and make Hades' soul kind, but he can't seem to finish it.
